What happens if there are pests at the property after I move in?

Who handles pest control? Is it the tenant's or landlord's responsibility?

While Ikos does not handle property maintenance, we do our best to ensure property owners take care of their rental units to provide safe and habitable living conditions. That said, even though no one expects such issues to arise at a property during your lease term, disturbances may occur including the occasional unwanted pests.

If you encounter pests while living at a rental property, it's important to know both the owner's responsibilities and your own responsibilities as different cities and states have different laws. In almost all regions, landlords are legally required to make the property safe and sanitary for move-in. Depending on the region, however, and depending on if the unit is a single-family home or in a multi-unit building, the responsibility to exterminate pests during the course of the lease may shift to the tenant. Regardless, we recommend doing your best to locate the source of the pest, if possible, and alerting your landlord/property manager right away to inform them of the details so you can work together to resolve it.
